slow ssh session

I am in Europe and am experiencing a slow ssh connection to a Linux box based in USA. I am using KiTTY and would like to know if there are sny settings which I can enable or disable which may speed up the connection so that there is no terminal delay or lag.

Likewise if there are any settings on the Linux box or WinTel desktop, then I will try that too.

From a Google search, it's been suggested that you can enable ssh compression and set the compression level to 9. I can see the option to enable compression, but I can find no configuration preference, to set the compression level, so I assume it's using a built-in or default value.

Would it be possible to add this option into the KiTTY menu ?

If it's not possible to add this feature to KiTTY (is it possible), then does anyone have any other suggestions on how to speed up ssh sessions ?

Use a different cypher without compromising on security ?
