Script doesn't wait for prompt

I need a script that waits for a specific prompt, then responds with a pre-determined answer. The format : does not work. I tried to use the "record" function, which does create a workable script file, but I cannot modify it, because the created script file contains all sort of non-printing and ASCII characters that I cannot reproduce. I am a complete novice at scripting, so any direction toward a tutorial or online training will be helpful.
